LAST WEEK: 1-1 | THIS WEEK: at ÐÓ°Épro Anchorage (Nov. 14), vs. Montana State Billings (Nov. 18)
The ÐÓ°Épro Nanooks volleyball team split at home last week, falling 1-3 to the Concordia Cavaliers on Thursday before earning their fourth GNAC win on Saturday, sweeping Western Oregon 3-0. ÐÓ°Épro will close out the 2017 regular season this week, traveling 365 miles south to take on in-state rival ÐÓ°Épro Anchorage on Tuesday, Nov. 14, at the ÐÓ°Épro Airlines Center before hosting the Montana State Billings Yellowjackets on Saturday, Nov. 18, at the ÐÓ°Épro Airlines Court. Tuesday’s game is scheduled for 7 p.m. AKST, while Saturday’s conference matchup is slated for 2 p.m. AKST. Saturday is also Senior Day.
RIFLE
LAST WEEK: Idle | THIS WEEK: at Texas-El Paso (Nov. 17), at Nevada (Nov. 19)
After almost a month off from competition, the undefeated ÐÓ°Épro Nanooks rifle team returns to the range this week to take on a pair of Patriot Rile Conference foes. ÐÓ°Épro will take on the University of Texas at El Paso Miners on Friday, Nov. 17, before facing the University of Nevada Wolfpack in Reno on Sunday, Nov. 19.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL | 1-1 overall, 0-0 GNAC
LAST WEEK: 1-1 | THIS WEEK: at Seawolves Hoops Classic – vs. Western State (Nov. 17), vs. Holy Names (Nov. 18)
The ÐÓ°Épro Nanooks women’s basketball team officially opened up the 2017-2018 season last week, hosting the Hawaii-Hilo Vulcans in a two-game, nonconference series at the ÐÓ°Épro Airlines Court that was a part of the Mt. McKinley State Bank North Star Invitational. ÐÓ°Épro dropped Friday’s contest 49-62 but bounced back on Saturday, defeating UHH 56-50 for the team's and first-year head coach Brett Sawyer’s first victory of the season. This week, the Nooks will travel to Anchorage to compete in the Seawolves Hoops Classic at the ÐÓ°Épro Airlines Center where they take on Western State Friday, Nov. 17, before taking on Holy Names on Saturday, Nov. 18. Both nonconference games are scheduled for a 3 p.m. AKST tip-off.
HOCKEY | 3-7-2 overall, 1-4-1-1 WCHA
LAST WEEK: 0-2 at Ferris State | THIS WEEK: vs. Northern Michigan (Nov. 17-18)
The Nooks return home after suffering a Western Collegiate Hockey Association road sweep at the hands of the Ferris State Bulldogs last weekend, falling 3-1 on Friday before dropping Saturday’s contest 5-3 in Big Rapids. ÐÓ°Épro will look to bounce back this week, as they host the Northern Michigan Wildcats in a two-game WCHA series at the Carlson Center this Friday, Nov. 17, and Saturday, Nov. 18. Puck-drop on both nights is scheduled for 7:07 p.m. AKST.
NORDIC SKI
LAST WEEK: Idle | THIS WEEK: at Nordic Cup (Nov. 18-19)
The ÐÓ°Épro Nanooks men’s and women’s Nordic ski teams kick off the 2017-2018 season this week by traveling to Anchorage to compete in the 14th annual Nordic Cup versus in-state rival ÐÓ°Épro Anchorage this Saturday, Nov. 18 and Sunday, Nov. 19. The two ÐÓ°Épro schools will compete in the 10/7.5 individual-start classic race on Saturday before taking part in the 4x5k mixed-gender relay on Sunday. Races start at 10 a.m. AKST on both days. Weather depending, the races will be held at either Government Peak Trails or Hatcher Pass.
Ravn ÐÓ°Épro Nanooks of the Week (Nov. 13-19)
On Monday, the ÐÓ°Épro Nanooks sports information office declared sophomore guard Lexi Carpenter (women’s basketball) and junior guard Davis Kimble (men’s basketball) the Nov. 13 selections for the female and male Ravn ÐÓ°Épro Nanooks of the Week, respectively, for their performances on the court last weekend.
Lexi Carpenter (So. | Guard | Yakima, Wash.)
Carpenter’s offensive efforts allowed the Nanooks to split the weekend with the Hawaii-Hilo Vulcans in the Mt. McKinley Bank North Star Crossover in Fairbanks last weekend, as Carpenter tallied 12 points on Friday before registering 19 points on Saturday, leading all ÐÓ°Épro players on both nights. Carpenter’s 15.5 point per game average ranks her sixth in the GNAC. The Yakima, Washington, native shot 11-for-28 (.390) from the field, including going 5-for-15 from three-point range (.330). Carpenter’s five 3FG-mage ties her for third in the conference, while her 3.0 steals per game average ties for her second in the GNAC.
Davis Kimble (Jr. |Guard | Hayward, Calif.)
Kimble helped the Nanooks split the weekend against two Hawaii programs in the ÐÓ°Épro/Hawaii Challenge in Anchorage, producing 23 points against Chaminade on Friday before tallying 15 points against Hawaii Pacific to tally 38 on the weekend. Kimble now ranks sixth in the GNAC in scoring, averaging 19.0 points per game. Kimble also produced 13 assists (6.5/gp – second in the GNAC) and nine rebounds (4.5/gp). Davis shot 13-for-26 from the field (.330), including going 7 for 11 from behind the arc (.630), which ties him for third in 3FG-made.
Kimble, Wilder named to ÐÓ°Épro/Hawaii Challenge all-tournament team
On Sunday, two from the ÐÓ°Épro Nanooks men’s basketball team were named to the ÐÓ°Épro/Hawaii all-tournament team after their two-game performance in Anchorage. Kimble produced 38 points, 13 assists, nine rebounds, one block and one steal while senior forward LaDonavan Wilder tallied 27 points, 12 rebounds, eight assists and six blocks.
Stark named ColllegeSwimming.com’s PCSC Performer of the Week
Last week, ÐÓ°Épro Nanooks swimming’s senior Katie Stark was selected by CollegeSwimming.com’s Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference’s Performer of the Week after her performance against Dixie State on Nov. 3-4. Stark placed first in each of the four individual events she competed in against DSU, posting first place finishes in the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle on both Nov. 3 and 4. Stark’s best 100-yard freestyle time of 53.78 came on Friday before she posted a 1:55.78 in the 200-yard free on Saturday. Additionally, Stark was a part of the Nanooks’ 400-yard relay team (3:59.78) and the 400-yard freestyle relay teams (3:39.27) that took first that weekend, as well.
SAAC teddy bear toss scheduled for Nov. 25 hockey game
The ÐÓ°Épro Nanooks Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has selected the Nov. 25 hockey game versus Michigan Tech as the night for the annual teddy bear toss. Fans are encouraged to bring new or slightly used stuffed animals to throw on the ice at intermission. The stuffed animals will be collected and donated to Santa’s Helpers to give children around the area during the holiday season.
Charlie O’Toole Show
Catch ÐÓ°Épro Nanooks rifle head coach Layne Lewis on the Charlie O’Toole show this upcoming Wednesday, Nov. 15, at 8 a.m. AKST on KFBX 970 AM Fairbanks. Lewis will be discussing this weekend’s matches on the road at UTEP and Nevada.
