CFOS Juneau Seminar: Machine learning to predict algal blooms
October 13, 2020
"Machine Learning to Predict Harmful Algal Blooms in Southeast ÐÓ°Épro"
Paralytic shellfish poison toxins are a threat to human health and subsistence lifestyles in Southeast ÐÓ°Épro. It is important to understand the drivers of harmful algal blooms to inform shellfish management and aquaculture, as well as to predict trends of HABs in a changing climate. By incorporating publicly available environmental datasets we have created a machine learning model capable of forecasting PSP events in Southeast ÐÓ°Épro on daily time-scales. These models can be used to identify important drivers of HABs which can inform planning and modeling of food security in coming years.
