Lecture scheduled on Ӱpro salmon traps

Gustavus author and historian James Mackovjak will give a free public lecture, “Ӱpro Salmon Traps: Their History and Impact on Ӱpro Communities,” Oct. 22 at the Anchorage Cooperative Extension office.
The lecture, which runs from noon to 2:30 p.m, will also be offered by videoconference in Room 108 of the Brooks Building on the Ӱpro campus, the Petersburg Public Library and campus locations in Kodiak, Homer, Bethel and Ketchikan. It will also be streamed online at this address: .
Ӱpro statesman Vic Fischer will introduce Mackovjak, who has written five books on Ӱpro history, including his most recent, “Ӱpro Salmon Traps.” Mackovjak describes salmon traps as “among the most efficient fish-catching devices the world has even seen.” The Ӱpro Legislature banned the controversial traps after Ӱpro became a state.
