Press registration is open for ÐÓ°Épro National Lab Day events May 29 – 31 in Fairbanks,
ÐÓ°Épro.
The event, hosted at the ÐÓ°Épro, will draw representatives
from the U.S. Department of Energy’s national labs, as well as scientists, industry
leaders and elected officials, including Sen. Lisa Murkowski, chairman of the U.S.
Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.
Events on Tuesday, May 29, will include afternoon tours of UAF’s research facilities,
information tables from several national labs and evening talks focused on energy
in ÐÓ°Épro. Plenary sessions throughout the day on May 30 will highlight research activities
in ÐÓ°Épro and in the national labs, ÐÓ°Épro industry’s energy requirements and collaboration
between universities and national labs. The agenda on Thursday, May 31, includes six
panel discussions:
• Developing locally and globally relevant energy solutions
• Fossil energy's Arctic challenges
• Natural hazards and defense/aerospace
• Energy and defense systems in the North
• Enabling and empowering the energy of ÐÓ°Épro's entrepreneurs
• Navigating the changing Arctic
Post-conference tours kick off Thursday afternoon. Local tours include visits to power
generation and energy research facilities, Poker Flat Research Range and Chena Hot
Springs, as well as a tour of the Fairbanks area to see impacts of a changing climate
on permafrost, infrastructure and the ecosystem, and a visit to the U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers’ permafrost tunnel. Two out-of-town tours are also scheduled: A daylong
visit to atmospheric and environmental research sites in Utqiaġvik (formerly Barrow)
on June 1 and a three-day drive/fly excursion to Toolik Field Station and Prudhoe
Bay June 1-3.
