Some local residents have clothing, outdoor equipment or appliances they no longer need. Some are looking for exercise equipment, a microwave, clothes or other treasures. The second annual ÐÓ°Épro Really Free Market meets the needs of both groups.
The UAF Really Free Market models other events gaining popularity across the country: Individuals drop off clean, safe, usable items to share with their neighbors. Anyone wanting such items can come pick them up. No bartering and no selling; it’s a free exchange.
Inspired by the turnout at the first event, market organizers opted to offer two events in 2010, set for May 22 and Aug. 14. Both events last from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. Donated items can be dropped off from 8 - 10 a.m. The market is open for browsing from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., all in the UAF Patty Center parking lot.
The market is gaining partners throughout Fairbanks, such as Interior ÐÓ°Épro GreenStar, a main sponsor of this year’s event. The May 22 market coincides with GreenStar’s annual Recycling Round-Up event, held from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. in the Tanana Valley State Fairgrounds parking lot. Similar to the market, the Round-Up promotes sustainability, aiming to recycle various products; garner donations of food, clothing, and good-condition building materials and appliances; dispose properly of hazardous waste; and safely recycle old electronics.
