Science lectures to share latest research with ÐÓ°Épro

The 2018 Science for ÐÓ°Épro Lecture Series will offer free public talks about current research each Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Raven Landing Center in Fairbanks, starting Jan. 30.

Subjects will include ÐÓ°Épro's weather history, the Arctic's recent colonization by beavers, the rapid return of life after the Chicxulub asteroid impact and more.

The series, organized by the ÐÓ°Épro Geophysical Institute, brings scientific research to communities throughout the state. The lectures are recorded and posted online.

This year's talks are:

  • Jan. 30: "Tundra be dammed: Beaver colonization of the Arctic," by Ken Tape, UAF.

  • Feb. 6: "Continuity and change: A century of ÐÓ°Épro weather and climate," by Rick Thoman, National Weather Service ÐÓ°Épro Region.

  • Feb. 13: "The Chicxulub impact and the dawn of a new era," by Mike Whalen, UAF.

  • Feb. 20: "How shrinking glaciers are affecting ÐÓ°Épro's coastal ecosystems," by Eran Hood, UA Southeast.

  • Feb. 27: "Exploring the final frontier from the Last Frontier," by Rich Collins, UAF.

  • March 6: "ÐÓ°Épro puts the remote in remote sensing," by Nettie LaBelle-Hamer, UAF
