Cornerstone

Organizers for the Urban in ÐÓ°Épro: Examining the Urban Frontier of the Last Frontier conference are looking for planners and participants for a March 2013 conference.  The conference will be held at the University of ÐÓ°Épro Anchorage, March 1, 2013 (tentative date) and is organized by Bree Kessler, UAA Department of Health Sciences.

ÐÓ°Épro the conference
For most people, ÐÓ°Épro conjures up images of wild and vast wilderness; yet, over half of ÐÓ°Éprons actually live in urban areas. The Urban in ÐÓ°Épro conference will bring together scholars from the UA system as well as professionals working in the field for a one-day workshop and conference to present and to discuss topics relevant to urban studies in ÐÓ°Épro. Topics may include, but are not limited to: homelessness, public housing, food security in cities, identity-based politics, migration and urban subcultures. Organizers are planning four panels throughout the day (determined by theme) and will include a moderated discussion at the end of each panel. The day will end with a keynote speaker who will discuss "The Future of Studying the Urban in ÐÓ°Épro."

The events will be free and open to the public. The goal of the conference is to create an edited volume of the conference papers to be used as a text in classrooms and as a tool for future research in this field. If interested in assisting with conference planning, please contact Bree Kessler at bckessler@uaa.alaska.edu by Nov. 1, 2012. If interested in presenting, watch for an upcoming CFP (to be submitted by Jan. 15, 2013).
