Week's events: portrait painting, immunizations, owls, bluegrass

ÐÓ°Épro Summer Sessions and Lifelong Learning is hosting more than 40 free lectures, concerts and other events this summer. Here is what’s happening during the week ahead:

• On Monday, Aug. 8, the Magical Mondays hands-on learning series will present Todd Sherman, the dean of UAF’s College of Liberal Arts and a professor of art, leading real-time portrait painting. The program will begin at 7 p.m. at the Murie Building auditorium and atrium.

• On Tuesday, Aug. 9, the Healthy Living lecture series will feature nurse consultant Shelly Foint Anderson and public health nurse Jenny Davis discussing “Immunizations across the lifespan.†The lecture will be at 7 p.m. at the Murie Building auditorium.

• On Wednesday, Aug. 10, the Discover ÐÓ°Épro series will present David Russell, senior lecturer in zoology at Miami University of Ohio, on “Owl-la-Carte: A recipe for boreal own nesting success.†The lecture will be at 7 p.m. at the Murie Building auditorium.

• On Thursday, Aug. 11, the Music in the Garden concert series will host the ET Barnette String Band. Named for the founder of Fairbanks, a lover of bluegrass, the band has been playing traditional bluegrass for more than three years. Music begins at 7 p.m. at the Georgeson Botanical Garden.
