Nope! The group class is meant for beginner swimmers. A beginner swimmer would be any student who is new to swimming up to having the ability to swim independently without assistance from a floatation device or guardian. If your child can already swim independently, they would be better suited for intermediate level lessons, which are currently only offered as private lessons.
If your child has an extreme fear of water, please let the instructor know prior to the start of lessons so she can better plan and work with you to make the transition to swimming as easy for your child as possible.
Everyone learns at a different pace and most children won’t be ready to swim completely on their own after seven weeks without further practice. To help your child, it’s recommended that you bring them to practice their swimming outside of class or practice swim skills at home. If your child has additional difficulties learning to swim, ask your instructor to provide additional ways to help your child and consider a private lesson in addition to group lessons. At the end of each course, your instructor will provide a ‘report card’ that details what areas your child is excelling in and what areas need additional support and practice.
Group classes contain up to 4 students. The group class is a 7 week course with one class each week. Each class is 30 minutes long.
Private lessons are 1-on-1 and can be scheduled with more flexibility. There is also a semi-private option for a 2-on-1 class. This is a great option for siblings, family members, or friends. Inquire for private lessons above two students. Private lessons can be great on their own or in addition to a group class. They can be scheduled for either 30 minutes or an hour and you can customize your lesson schedule with the instructor.
Wanting to help your child learn to swim is great! Bringing the skills they learn in class back with them is a great way to help them learn quicker and become stronger swimmers. For young children, incorporating safe swimming skills and water comfort into bathtime is a good first step. Speak with your instructor for a personalized plan for how to help your swimmer at home!
Absolutely! In fact, it’s highly encouraged! Learning to swim is an amazing skill to gain for safety, exercise, and fun. Swimming is a great low-impact sport that engages both strength and endurance. Learning to swim also opens doors to new activities and adventures whether that is fishing on the lake or taking a dip at the beach on your next vacation. Private lessons involve creating a highly personalized plan based on your schedule, how you learn best, and your goals. Swim lessons are a highly valuable investment in yourself.
Hello! My name is Grace and I’ve been an instructor for around 4 years. I currently study Wildlife Biology here at UAF. I strongly believe that swimming is a highly valuable skill to learn with its applications in safety, adventure, and exercise! I got into swim instructing to teach kids to enjoy swimming and increase water safety awareness but I’ve since grown to also teach adults. I look forward to working with you!
