Keys to successful remote field research
Safely handling shipping hazardous materials
A variety of hazardous materials (hazmat) are used in research, including chemicals, battery-powered equipment, and gas-powered equipment. The US Department of Transportation (USDOT) regulates transport of hazmat. Proper transportation requires training, proper packaging, and sometimes paperwork. Failure to comply with USDOT regulations can result in fines and/or prosecution.
UAF Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management (EHSRM) can help you with shipping hazmat to and from the field or to collaborators at other institutions. There is no charge for this service, although you pay for shipping supplies and cost.
UAF Nanook Recreation field safety courses
Working in the field has a unique set of challenges and risks. UAF Outdoor Adventures staff recognizes those hazards and has worked with researchers on campus to design courses that will give you the tools, tips and tricks to help mitigate some of the risk associated with field work.
